Then one night the hill cracked again. This time a huge rip
almost split the royal bedchamber in two. The King jumped out of bed and exploded with fury.

“There must be an explanation!” he thundered. “Call the
Wizards! We demand an explanation!”

But the Wizards could only stare at the crevasse, trembling in their slippers.

In the morning the Wizards were nowhere to be found. They had slunk away under the cover of darkness.

That very minute the King ordered the court to be moved down to the village. All the lords and ladies had to lodge with the villagers in their humble homes.
